Without this emotion core, you may find that your story lacks drive and will struggle to engage the reader. Think of short stories as a study of feeling - rather than a full-blown plot, you can home in on an emotion and let that dictate the tone and narrative arc. Once you have your idea (which could be a setting, character, or event), try to associate it with a strong emotion. Any stories that are written with these resources are still your intellectual property, so you can freely share or publish them if they turn out well! If you’re still stumped, looking through some short story ideas or writing prompts for inspiration. Want more dialogue writing tips? We've got a free course for that. These little snippets can serve as the genesis of a story, or could even make it in verbatim as inspiration for your dialogue. Pay extra attention to the news, the stories your friends tell you, and all the things that go on around - it will surely serve you well when it comes to brainstorming a story. It’s not just your own life you can take inspiration from either. Whether these experiences are the basis for a story or function as a small piece of embellishment, they can save your imagination from having to do all the heavy lifting. After all, something you overhear in a conversation between your aunties could be perfect short story fodder - as could a colorful character who turns up at your workplace. Writers these days often have a document open in their phone’s notes app to remember things that might spark their imagination at a later date. If there’s a funny story you always reach for at a party or a family dinner, you could repurpose for a piece of writing or let it serve as a launchpad for your imagination. While you might not have lived through an epic saga akin to Gulliver’s Travels, you probably have an anecdote or two that would easily form the basis of a short story. When it comes to establishing a story’s premise, real-life experiences can be your first port of call - “write what you know”, as the old adage goes. By limiting yourself to a few characters and one or two locations, you may find it easier to keep your story from getting out of hand and spiraling off into tangents. While Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” has a larger cast of characters, the story takes place perhaps over one hour in a town square. John Cheever’s “The Swimmer” is about one character: a suburban American father who decides to swim through all of his neighbor’s pools. Short story writers often find it fruitful to focus on a single character, setting, or event - an approach that is responsible for some true classics. There’s less pressure to have a rich narrative mapped out from A to Z before your pen hits the paper. Short stories, by their very nature, tend to be narrower in scope than a novel. Start with an interesting character or setting

Just because the chassis is rusted out, if the engine only has 50,000, that's a good sign. In Labrador, we love when we have these old used vehicles that we find that are still good. When they're tired of looking at it as an ornament in their back yard. But there is the odd time that they just want to sell it and get rid of it. And sometimes they don't want to get rid of them. But you know what? In Labrador, everyone's got a vehicle stored away in their backyard that they hold a lot of sentimental value for. We're starting to see a lot of newer models now. Where are they all coming from?ĬB: There are quite a few vehicles. They were all dirt roads.ĪT: It seems like for a place as remote as North West River, you're able to find a lot of cars and trucks. You could drive a car as long as you had one, that's all. So there was no licence, registration, insurance, nothing needed on our side of the river. When we were small, when we were 15 years old, we had cars and we didn't even have to have a driver's licence in our town – because the town was divided by a river and you could only get over in a cable car. Hitting these jumps and these bumps, and, it was a lot of fun. Everybody would hop in and we would go around the pits. Drive them around and we used to do like derby cars. We used to buy cars and fix them up and we used to drive them up in the pits. I never told them (my parents) yet about that, so hopefully I won't get in trouble for it. My parents were out of town, and I took this car for a ride with my buddies. I actually purchased a car for $200 off of a friend. What was it like when you first got started?ĬB: When we were 13 years old, when we were in high school. That I traded for a motorcycle that I had.ĪT: Now, you've both been big into cars for a very long time. Ross Humby: My first car was probably an old Chevy Vega. So yeah, that 1973 Dodge Charger was definitely my first one. I basically bought it just to say I owned a car. But there was a lot of other good parts on it. And I wanted to rebuild it, but it just had a little too much rust. We talked cars with Collin Baikie, shop owner and pro-MMA fighter, and Ross Humby, gas bar manager and professional scrounger.ĪutoTRADER.ca: Tell us about your first cars.Ĭollin Baikie: My first car was, actually, I was 12 years old. In Season Two, airing now, they'll build a jet boat for search and rescue, a food truck boat, and a new way of handling roofing. In the first season, they built things like a school-bus-turned-performance-stage, an asphalt recycling truck, and a fan boat. That's what the crew of CRB Automotive does on Discovery's Last Stop Garage. Instead, you need to make it yourself using whatever you can find. You can't just order in a new piece of equipment, especially if you need it sometime within the year. When you're that far from civilization, you need to be a little more self-sufficient. North West River is about as far north as you can drive on the East Coast, and it's the end of the road. If you want to go to a city, you're looking at a plane trip. The nearest place of note is eight hours away by car, and the road that can take you there didn't even exist 15 years ago. It's a town, and we're using that term a little loosely, with fewer than 600 people residing there. By now, it seems like such a long time ago By June of that year, Instagram feeds like. In any event, though, the meme also can be used in some creative and hilarious ways that aren’t quite so mean-spirited, too. History of the Kermit Sipping Tea Meme The meme started to evolve in the early days of the year 2014. The “But That’s None Of My Business” meme is pretty much the personification of that person you know who thinks that saying “No offense, but…” or “Relax, it’s just a joke!” cancels out the offensiveness of whatever offensive thing they just said - which means that by their logic, you’re being unreasonable if you’re upset by what they said. memes but thats none of my business kermit the frog. 305 views 1 upvote Made by bull3131 4 years ago in politics. Caption your own images or memes with our Meme Generator. I’ll be honest: I’m actually not a huge fan of this particular meme. Much like Pokemon, memes do occasionally evolve - and “But That’s None Of My Business” seems to have leveled up, so to speak. In some cases, the image doesn’t even include a drink at all. The catchphrase “but that’s none of my business” has begun appearing on social media paired with images of all sorts of people and characters (real and fictional) drinking all sorts of drinks (tea, yes, but also soda, coffee, water, and wine, among others). Kermit the frog has gone viral starring in the now Instagram famous 'none of my business though' meme. Recently, though, the meme seems to have undergone a bit of a change: It’s no longer limited to pictures of Kermit. It took off from there, with both an Instagram account dedicated to these memes and a few hashtags on Twitter providing a steady stream of images of Kermit drinking tea while stating some pretty judgmental opinions. You don’t see that every day, particularly on the internet, when time passes in the blink of an eye.Īccording to Know Your Meme, memes featuring Kermit the Frog began appearing on Instagram as early as January 2014, with the earliest known example of the “But That’s None Of My Business” macro occurring on June 17 of that year. However,it’s proven to have a staying power, a tenacity, that’s honestly kind of surprising. The meme obviously isn’t new in fact, by meme standards, it’s ancient. Others, however, refuse to die - and as the best “Sipping Tea” memes demonstrate, the catchphrase “but that’s none of my business” is definitely one of them.
